“I” of the Consumer Week in Review

Not every product or company inspires passion. The founder or CEO may be passionate about the company, but that doesn’t mean their employees are. Some industries are just dull. But that creates a problem for marketers. It’s not absolutely vital that someone marketing a product be passionate about it, but you have to be able to fake it. You have to believe in it, in the work you’re doing, in the fact that what you’re marketing will make people’s lives better.

Here is a look at our posts from last week:

“I” of the Consumer Week in Review

The marketing surrounding the 2014 World Cup in Brazil has accentuated a general shift in advertising over the last couple of years. That is, brands are telling stories with their ads that don’t necessarily have a lot to do with their products or services. They, instead, attempt to tap into a mindset or a lifestyle. They want to associate their brand with a feeling or an idea. It’s a clever form of advertising that does not feel like advertising, because people actually want to engage with it. It’s fun!

The big story this past week was the leak of government surveillance programs. And as I’m in DC this weekend, I figured it appropriate to comment briefly. The way I see it is as a marketer. While it may not cause as big a stir among the masses, advertisers have been collecting this type of information under the radar for years. The fact that the government is doing it shouldn’t change the way you feel about it. Nothing you do is private anymore, period.

If spent the last week off the grid, you may have missed these posts:

  1. New Blog Series: Steal     This
  2. 3 Stages of Content     Marketing
  3. Building a Website? Don’t     Forget the Pages You Don’t Need Yet
  4. Sponsor a Classroom:     DonorsChoose.org

Yesterday was Armed Forces Day. I’m reminded of the many people that I’ve known that have served. I’m reminded of how much we rely on their service to continue to enjoy the daily freedoms we enjoy. And I’m thankful that there are people far braver than I, people that risk their lives each and every day to ensure that I can live the life that I live. Thank you!

It’s hard to believe that there’s only a few days left in April. I’m not ready for the May flowers that everyone tells me are coming. Are you? I guess the one positive is that the onset of May means that summer is right around the corner, along with the many joys that come with it! That’s something worth celebrating.
