Can companies who have damaged their reputation ever really recover? The VWs and Wells Fargos of the world are working hard to regain consumer trust after large scale public scandals. My opinion is that these brands will never truly be on level footing with their competitors who did not suffer the same fate. And that should prove the value of strong ethics. Companies work hard to craft a trusted brand, so why risk screwing that up in order to cut corners or break the law to achieve some short term win?

To succeed in any job the one skill you have to have more than anything else is the ability to, and desire to learn. This is as true of marketers as it is of every other profession. No marketer is fully equipped for a job the moment they start it. It takes practice. It takes help from those around you. It takes talking to other marketers who have been through it before. It takes classes, and articles, and conferences. If you are not continually learning new skills and keeping your knowledge up to date, you are not doing your job.

For all of us, the day to day grind of work has a tendency to make things more difficult. It’s tedious, tiring, and yawn-inducing. For that reason, we need to build in time to step away. Not just nights, weekends, and vacations. Build time into each and every week where you completely shut yourself off from what is going on so that you can think bigger. Brainstorm, meditate, go for a walk, and listen to music. The big ideas don’t come while you’re putting out the latest fire, I promise.

Little changes can have a big impact. With only 5 weeks left in 2016, it’s time to think about those little things you have been putting off all year. What can you do in the next month to clear your plate for the new year? What policies can you implement or update? What tests can you start? What reports can you automate? In January, the calendar turns over again. Let’s make an effort not to carry over too many 2016 issues.
