Zach Heller Marketing Week in Review

The hardest thing to learn how to do is say no. But for a marketer, saying no is critical. It’s critical to say no when presented with a strategy we don’t believe in, or when we’re offered a new project that doesn’t fit into our schedules, or when we discover that an ad campaign is not delivering the necessary ROI. We don’t have enough time or money to do everything, and so we can’t win by always saying yes. The sooner you learn how to say no with confidence, the better off you’ll be.

Having too many ideas is a good problem to have. So if that’s your biggest problem as a company, good for you. Now how do you solve it? Become experts at prioritization. Understand your team’s capabilities. And work to avoid demoralizing those employees whose ideas are not being worked on right away. The better you are at working through the highest impact ideas first, and getting the buy-in from your team necessary to succeed, the more successful you’ll be.

Roger Ailes, the late founder and one-time CEO of Fox News once said, “All business is basically about having something someone really wants.” When you think about it, that’s an easy way of describing the function of marketing. You work with product to create something people need and work with advertising to get the word out about it. When you do your job well, you have an interested segment of consumers banging on your door.

Today, a recommendation. I’ve long been an avid reader of Occam’s Razor, the blog by Avinash Kausnik, Analytics Ninja, Author, and Digital Marketing Evangelist at Google. There is no better resource for quality, in-depth digital marketing tips can case studies. Posts are well thought-out and provide an incredible amount of detail and actionable insights.
