Having too many ideas is a good problem to have. So if that’s your biggest problem as a company, good for you. Now how do you solve it? Become experts at prioritization. Understand your team’s capabilities. And work to avoid demoralizing those employees whose ideas are not being worked on right away. The better you are at working through the highest impact ideas first, and getting the buy-in from your team necessary to succeed, the more successful you’ll be.

There is a great quote by Peter Drucker that I always come back to. “The aim of marketing is to making selling superfluous.” That is to say, if you do your job as a marketer, the customers will come running. You won’t have to sell to them, because the marketing alone has convinced them that they want to purchase. They have made the decision before they ever get to your store/website. Within a company, the general rule is that the further you move up the “corporate ladder” the further away from the customer you get. That doesn’t make much sense when you stop and think about it. The high level conversations and decisions need to include more customer representation. And we can represent them if we don’t talk to them, know what they need and how our products fit into their lives. That’s why all companies need to instill in employees at all levels a closeness to customers. High level marketers should make it their job to engage with real customers once a month or more.
