If you’re new to marketing, or you’re an experienced marketer trying out a new initiative or strategy, I have one piece of advice for you above all else: Give it a chance.
If you’re going to market yourself, really market yourself. Invest the time and money to make it succeed.
I’ve seen too many small business owners and marketers hesitantly decide to take a stab at marketing, only to give up before the money is spent, the results are measured, the campaign is optimized, and the success and/or failure is understood. They dip their toes in the water, but they pull back because it’s either too hot or too cold.
Successful marketing takes time. Only the lucky few can press the right button the first time and get huge early successes. The rest of us have to work at it, some longer than others.
That’s why you need to do some research, talk to people in the space who’ve been there before you, work with experienced agencies or marketing pros, and take a bit of risk to make sure you’re giving yourself every chance to succeed.
A sure recipe for failure is to try your hand at marketing without seeking help or understanding of what you’re doing, and make a decision the next day that what you’re doing isn’t working.
