The major news from the tech world this past week was the appointing of Marissa Mayer as Yahoo!’s new CEO. And since everyone else has already had the chance to weigh in on it again and again, I figured I would take a stab at it now, on a much more limited scale. To those who like the hire because it brings Google’s intelligence to the #3 search engine, you’re missing the big picture. The world is big enough for multiple search engines, and Yahoo! should focus on “keeping up” in their search business, and expanding everything else. They’re a content producer and a display ad network, and if they can grow both of those pieces of business, search can take a backseat.
